Thanks to contributions from a descendant of Alf Beatty we now have several nineteenth century photos of James Beatty and family members and have identified everybody in this 1892 family photo. We have two copies of it which have aged and been damaged in different ways, so both are included here.
- Beatty family 1892. l to r Alf (4), James senior (50), Kathleen (9), Emma (17), Marcella (40), ill-fated baby Rupert, Jim (18), Archie (15) and Charles Gordon (7)
- Beatty family, Melbourne 1892
The following are the earliest family photos we have and were very likely taken about when James Beatty and Marcella Constance Paget were married in Dublin in May 1873. The first, larger photo of James from this period has the Dublin photographer’s details, and the two miniature photos of James (worn by Marcella in a locket and a pendant) show him apparently wearing the same suit and were possibly all taken on the same day. The last two photos of James and Marcella both from the same pendant also appear to have been taken at the same time.
- James Beatty, by Chancellor, 55 Lower Sackville street, Dublin
- James Beatty, probably Dublin about 1873? From Marcella’s locket.

The document referring to James’s drapery business came from Ireland with the family. I’ve included the dedication in Archie’s Bible as it is another example of James’s own words and handwriting. I’d love to hear from any relations with other photos or documents of this family from the nineteenth century.
